History

Opened in 2006, Metanoia is the youngest undergraduate residence on campus. In the beginning, Metanoia was referred to as the “Nuwe Koshuis”, and only gained its name during a fateful house meeting, late 2006 due to a petition by students of the house! It’s evident that ‘A change of mind, a change of heart’ was something which the campus was waiting for.

Metanoia is the largest co-ed residence in the Southern Hemisphere, and the largest on Stellenbosch campus. The residence houses 501 people, all in single rooms. It is one of a handful of reses that offers its own gym, as well as underground parking, TV rooms, a computer centre and a study area that is used for learning purposes throughout the year.

Beyond its extended facilities, Metanoia prides itself in its prioritisation of diversity. We celebrate the differences of people within our res, and endeavour to accept each other for who we are. Here at Metanoia, there is no inequality, nor a “standard” Metanoian, but rather a large family of people that live together based on values and acceptance. Stellenbosch is a community going through immense change, and we as Metanoians are proud to encourage it.
